Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV). Love is Patient and Love is Kind

I think it is safe to say that most Christians are familiar with Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV).

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Lately, I have been thinking about the topic of Love. Over the past few months, I have seen these verses used in a way that states – If your love is not these things then do you really have love? With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I think it is a great time to talk about love.

I think when we hear the verses of what Love is we tend to think that Love is these things but I wonder if we truly think about the process of Love. Where there is Love there is also the other natural human emotions that interfere with Love.

Love is patient and Love kind but are we patient and kind?

Love does not dishonor others and neither should we.

Love does not keep a record of wrongs but oh don’t we all?

Love always protects, trusts, hopes but how quickly we fail at this.

Love always perseveres and Love never fails but how quickly we toss Love aside.

If Love is all these beautiful things such as patience, kindness, and forgiveness (and I believe it is) then we must make our love this way. Our Love should be expressed as patient and kind. How blessed we are to experience Love. Love is a gift that requires great care. It can’t be tossed in a corner, overlooked, or stashed away. Love is a garden that must be watered daily. If we want our Love to be all the things Love should be then we have to participate in the building of love. I want to Love with my whole heart. I want to love with less of me and more of those I love. I encourage us all this Valentine’s day to let our loved ones know how truly special they are.
