What to Know Before You Start a Blog

This post is part 1 of Blogging 101. I'm sharing some tips on What to Know Before You Start a Blog. These tips are based on my blogging experiencesWhat to Know Before You Start a Blog

This post is part 1 of my Blogging 101 series. For this post, I’m sharing some tips on What to Know Before You Start a Blog. These are the key areas you need to consider before you start blogging.

These tips are based on my blogging experiences. *disclaimer: I’m not the worlds greatest blogger*. I plan on adding this little disclaimer to each post until I reach the status of “WORLDS GREATEST BLOGGER”. Ah what an honor that would be. for now, I’m just a blogger who has learned a thing or two and I’m sharing that knowledge with you. Here we go!

Make a Blogging Plan

This is my most important tip. It sounds simple but seriously, make a plan. Before you start your blog. Before you setup WP. Before you install a theme. Before you do anything at all – Make a blog plan. Making a blog plan is important because much like a puzzle, each piece of blogging fits in somewhere. Blogging almost has a domino effect to it. One piece of blogging will lead to another and you need to know where you want to go before you start the journey. Basically, your blog plan is your blog map.

You need to plan your trip before you set out on the road. You may be thinking – but I don’t know much about blogging.

That is fine! I didn’t know a thing about blogging when I started. I started because I wanted to write. Simple as that. I didn’t follow blogs. I didn’t care about bloggers. I didn’t know a thing. This is the truth. Even if you don’t know the first thing about blogging I still want you to make your blog map based on what you know.

So how do you make a blogging plan? Start by asking yourself these questions:

  • What do you want to write about?
  • What does your ideal photography look like?
  • If you follow other blogs – what do you like about those blogs?
  • What are your favorite colors, fonts, etc?
  • How far do you plan to go blogging?

Now, stop, reflect and start planning. Really dig into these answers because they will help you when you reach the blog design phase. Get a notepad and pen and perhaps a donut.

1: Outline what you want to blog about. You don’t need to have it all figured out but you need to have a good idea of what you want to write about.

2: After you have determined what you want to write about, I want you to ask yourself this – What am I passionate about?¬†Does this answer align with the answer to question 1? I’m asking you this because I want you to write content that is what you are passionate about and not what you think you should write about as a blogger.

3: What does your ideal photography look like? What is your style? There are countless photography styles. Find out what appeals to you the most. Your blog needs to have quality images. They don’t have to be picture perfect but they need to be quality images because poor quality images aren’t going to look so hot on your blog.

Each blog theme requires a certain image size otherwise you will have blurry or improperly sized images. After you know this information you will be prepared to find a photographer. We will talk fully about photography later on. This part is just planning and preparing so hold tight.

4: If you follow blogs write down what you like about those blogs. This will help you start deciding on a blog design. Don’t try to nail down the exact layout of your favorite blogger. This is your blog! Make it yours! Start out with a design you can grow with but is simple enough to use while you are learning. For now, I want you to simply write out features you like about your favorite blogs. We will talk about some awesome designs later one. Remember, we are making a plan so we can make informed decisions later on.

Don’t follow blogs? Perfectly fine! I didn’t follow a single blog when I started! Honestly! If you don’t have a favorite blogger then this is the time to do some research and start pinning designs, logos, colors, etc. that grab your attention. I have a small board where I pin blog related info. Feel free to check it out.

5: After you have all this outlined I want you to stop, reflect, and think about how far you want to go as a blogger. Do you want to blog for fun? a hobby? do you want it to be a job someday? I want you to think this out because blogging is work and you’re going to need to plan content. For now, we are daydreaming – so how far do you want to go? Write it out!

Now, stay tuned! We’ve made a blog map and next, we will talk about platforms and designs.
